Career Fair at Stanford

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Redfin (okay, just me and Sasha) will be at the BASES Career Fair at Stanford tomorrow if you’re in the neighborhood. Hopefully we fair better then Glenn did at the University of Washington, Fear and Loathing on the College Recruiting Trail :).

Check out HouseMath 2.0. You can calculate the total cost of ownership. Pretty cool stuff. Here is a quick analysis on my upcoming condo purchase:

ShackPrices gets keyword search

Sellsius, ShackPrices Adds Text Search Feature.

Hats off to the ShackPrices folks. This is something we had started working on but moved it to the back burner to get the Virtual Earth switch out of the way. Hopefully we can resurrect that project soon because I’d love to be able to search for lofts on Redfin. Until then I’ll use ShackPrices :).

Townhomes!?

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Q: Why I can’t I search Redfin for town homes?

A: The reason is that agents do not reliably tag town homes as such. Instead they are either tagged as a house or condo making it very hard for us to distinguish what it really is and therefore make it hard for us to enable you to search for them.

Optimism

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Last week was a frantic week as we raced to make our deadline. On Wednesday someone noticed this comment in Zillow’s page source; I’m sure it made us all smile:

Coverage of new Redfin version

Today I announced on the company blog what we’ve been up to for the last few months: Twice the size, Virtual Earth and Meebo.

Here are some other people talking about this release:

How did I end up at Redfin?

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I should first write a post about ‘How did I end up interviewing at Zillow’ since it is what spurred me into interviewing at Redfin. Anyhow, for those interested here is my Redfin time line and of course it may not be representative of your experience if you interview with us :).

June 14, 2006: I cold email Glenn with the subject ‘Opportunities at Redfin’:

Hi Glenn,

Don’t know if you remember or not but you left a comment on my blog a while back (http://blog.mattgoyer.com/archives/2006/04/12/65).

Anyhow, I’ve been following Redfin since late last summer and I’ve become increasingly interested in Seattle real estate (first buying a condo then starting to blog about new construction at http://www.urbnlivn.com). I’ve also been looking around for new job opportunities, preferably at a
Seattle startup and understandably Redfin is at the top of my list.

If you have the time and opportunities are available, I’d love to chat more about whether there would be a fit between Redfin and my skill/interest set.

Thanks!

Matt

June 23, 2006: Bryan, the Director of Product Management replies to the e-mail I sent to Glenn.

June 28, 2006: Thirty minute phone screen with Bryan. I take the call from the lawn in front of Building 50 at Microsoft.

June 28, 2006: Later in the day I find out the phone screen went well. We then schedule an in-person interview.

July 7, 2006: Interview at Redfin HQ

July 10/11, 2006: Offer extended

July 18, 2006: I go for dinner with Bryan and Glen (I’m a high maintenance candidate.)

July 21, 2006: I accept the offer

September 4, 2006: I start work

Update: Here is my hiring manager’s take on it :).

I applied now what?

Com2Kid’s Journal, [Getting a job] Advice request + complaints:

I am coming out of school with a year of internship experience; I took the internships hoping that finding a job after I graduated would be easier. Is it? Not by much.

I have gotten a fair number of inquirers about my resume. Send back information. No call back.

Here is an example of one such interchange. I really want an opportunity for this company; what in the world did I do wrong? It is a bit long; I was basically asked to give a list of improvements to their website, should I have responded with solely in depth technical improvements?

The company in question is Redfin.

Fortunately for Devlin while we may sometimes be slow to respond to e-mail we are always watching what is being said about Redfin in the blog world. Devlin seems like a pretty keen guy and I can certainly relate to the situation he is so I left him a comment, Hi from Redfin with feedback on response times and his suggestions on how to improve the site

Reminder: We’re hiring! College candidates as well as industry candidates.

(FWIW, I just filed a bug because that college recruiting page is missing a html title!)
