Joel’s search for office space

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Joel on Software, Office search continues:

The trouble is, if you go any deeper than two offices, the innermost offices won’t have daylight at all.

An office is about 10-12 feet deep; a corridor is 4-6 feet. That means that if the distance from the outside window to the core is more than, say, 30 feet, you either have to waste space or give someone a dark office.

Redfin in the San Francisco Chronicle

Monday, March 19th, 2007

This weekend the SF Chronicle had a great article about us, Redfin, an online brokerage, is challenging the status quo — and upsetting an industry:

Kelman bristles at being dismissed as just another discount broker.

“No one calls E-Trade a discount stock broker, no one calls Amazon a half-price book seller and no one calls Expedia a discount travel agency,” he said. “Our differences go beyond price. Our agents are more productive and we offer a different service.”

While a successful traditional agent might close two or three deals each month, Redfin agents are able to handle 25, Kelman said. That will ultimately keep operating costs down.

Newbie real estate agent

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Seattle PI, Selling real estate calls for math and people skills:

A typical Realtor was involved with 12 sales and earned $49,300 in 2004, according to the National Association of Realtors. But the typical Realtor in business two years or less earned just $12,850.

The typical real estate salesperson in King and Snohomish counties made $53,840 in 2005, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The top 10 percent made more than $75,890.

I have no comment on the math skills of real estate agents who blog.
