“Do You Understand What I Just Did!?”

Friday, April 11th, 2008

The other day a client called in because for the last five days they were unable to see any listing photos on our site.

I had him send in a screen shot so I could see for myself and sure enough none of the listing photos on our site were appearing. What I figured was wrong was that there was an issue with the CDN (content delivery network) that we use for serving our listing photos. See we serve content from three domains, Redfin.com and two different CDNs. Our listing images are on their own CDN and it appeared that only content from that domain wasn’t been properly served. Since this was the first we’d heard of this issue I had the client run a trace route which confirmed that he wasn’t able to connect to the CDN. Jeff later pointed out that trace route uses a different protocol (it’s not over port 80) so it might not have been the best test but it did point to a problem between the university network that this client was on and our CDN.

I then contacted our network operations team who then emailed the university and asked them if they were blocking our CDN. Turns out they were and two hours later we were unblocked. Upon getting confirmation that the problem was resolved our network engineer called me to let me know so I could follow up with the client. I said thanks and I guess I wasn’t enthusiastic enough in my thanks because he asked rather incredulously if I know what just happened. I said I didn’t. And he replied with that when he used to work at a university it would take weeks for a request to unblock a site to go through and he just got them to unblock us in only two hours. Practically a miracle!

Needless to say the client was happy to be able to see listing photos again as he’s in the middle of making another offer through us.

My house info is incorrect in Seattle

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

For our Seattle users…

If you search for your house on Redfin (and it is not for sale) we will show you the past sales information. If the past sales information is incorrect (for instance we display the wrong number of baths) you can submit a request to correct the information. To do so visit the King County Parcel Viewer, find your parcel, and there is a link on the parcel details page to ’submit a request to correct this information.’

How often are photos updated?

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Someone recently asked us how often the photos are updated on our site. The answer is that the timing for updates varies by MLS because they each have different back end systems that deliver data to us. The longest it can take to appear is 24 to 48 hours if the update we get is only daily.

Townhomes!?

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Q: Why I can’t I search Redfin for town homes?

A: The reason is that agents do not reliably tag town homes as such. Instead they are either tagged as a house or condo making it very hard for us to distinguish what it really is and therefore make it hard for us to enable you to search for them.

No multi-family or land on Redfin?

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

The last few days we have received a few e-mails asking if there is a way to search for either multi-family (duplex, triplex, etc) or land parcels on Redfin. Unfortunately we have to e-mail the users back saying that while we don’t support searching, nor do we have inventory listed for either of these listing types, we hope to add it soon.

However, while you will have to search elsewhere if you have the MLS # for the property and it’s in California or Washington we can assist you with the offer so that you get a Redfin Direct rebate.

We have received a few emails recently from people who can’t search our site. If that’s the case for you I recommend first making sure you are using a supported browser. The browsers we currently support on Windows are, IE 6 and FF 1.5 , on Macintosh we support Apple Safari 1.3 and 2.0 and FF 1.5 . If you are on a supported browser and still having problems check the version of Adobe Flash you are using. On Windows you need 7 , on Macintosh you need 9 . Next thing I’d check is to make sure you don’t have any weird search criteria set. Are you looking for houses between $200,000 and $250,000 and not finding any listings? Or maybe you have the fixer-upper checkbox set? Make sure to widen your search criteria to ensure that’s not the problem. 9 private loan 9 educationpayments day loans 90in uk loan home 90 theloan a work bridgeto a money college loan gohome loans a1 americaninc home loans abccredit bad money personal loan accesstexas access college loanloan consolidation access
